Hydrogen Fuel For Pollution-Free Cars

Hydrogen fuel is much desired as it does not produce any greenhouse gases when used. It exists as a special battery in next-generation vehicles where hydrogen as is mixed with oxygen from the environment to create electricity. Since the only by-product of the chemical reaction is water, it is free of carbon gases which is why so much hope is placed on it.

Who is using it?
Currently, the United States is leading the way in hydrogen fuel research. In 2003, then-President George W. Bush announced a USS1.2 billion SS 1.56 billion) hydrogen fuel initiative to develop and refine hydrogen power.

Big motor corporations such as Honda. Toyota, BMW, General Motors and Ford are also intensely researching hydrogen as a potential alternative fuel and some already have hydrogen-powered cars on the road.

Is it available here?
Although hydrogen-powered cars have been tested in Singapore over the years, no commercial vehicle is available for purchase thus far.

Last year, the Nanyang Technological University, in collaboration with Beijing's Tsinghua University and SBS Transit, launched Singapore's first hydrogen-powered bus. The bus was deployed to ferry athletes to venues during the Singapore Youth Olympic Games and was subsequently deployed on Service 185 for a year for fuel-cell trials.
